Ag Issues Team

The Station Camp FFA Agriculture Issues team has been busy presenting forums about organic agriculture to various community organizations and businesses. By the end of February, the team will have presented to the Sumner County Farm Bureau, Extension Office and Master Gardeners Club, the Nashville Ag Club, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, and the Gallatin Morning Rotary Club. The team will compete at the State FFA Convention in Gatlinburg in April. Team members are Kearstin Forte, Christy Chicas, Heather Dickson, Eric Briggs, Krista Gilbert, Bailey Forester, and Aaron Haley.

TWRA visits SCHS

Warden Eric Anderson with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) recently conducted boater safety classes at Station Camp High School as part of Glenn Tuttle's Contemporary Issues class. Mr. Anderson taught the class 3 sessions in which the class learned boating regulations, loading and unloading boats, PWCs and PFDs as well as responsible navigation. Twelve students chose to complete the necessary testing and received their boating permits. Picture with Eric Anderson are Bison Paige Gregory and Blake Holder.

American West

Thirty 11th-grade English Honors students toured the "Visions of the American West" exhibit at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens with Mr. James Dittes and Ms. Doreen Brown, viewing artifacts and artwork from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. The trip builds on two units the class has completed: one examining Native American artifacts and a current project where students are examining the history of the American West through first hand accounts and photographs.

All-Sumner County Band

Congrats to the Station Camp Instrumental Music Program for having 22 students selected by audition for the All County Band. This is a great showing for Station Camp and a testament to the musicians for their hard work and commitment to excellence. The All County band will rehearse and perform at Station Camp High School on February 9, 10, and 11. Bison first place students include Wren Pfahl (flute), Michaela Cundari (clarinet), Noel Pratt (Bass Clarinet), Alex Thompson (Alto Sax) and Jacob Alegria (Percussion). The SCHS Instrumental Music Program is under the direction of James Waters.

Wreaths Across America

Spirit Night at Vanderbilt

Station Camp will be participating in its first ever Spirit Night at the Vanderbilt Men's Basketball game vs. Lafayette on December 21st at Memorial Gymnasium. The game tips off at 7pm. The is a great opportunity to support the various SC groups that will be performing at the game including the band, cheerleaders, chorus and dance team. Not to mention cheering for our own John Jenkins. Tickets are available in the SCHS office for $12. See Ms. Oliver for tickets.

DECA and the Predators

DECA traveled to the Bridgestone Arena where they received a behind the scenes tour, participated in a forum with executives from the Arena and the Nashville Predators. They also took time to cheer on the Preds versus the Edmonton Oilers. Several students were seen on the Jumbotron during the game!

Kayley Davault - Best In Show

I had the opportunity to attend the Fourth Annual Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition at the Renaissance Center in Dickson this weekend. He or she "attends Station Camp High School" was called out an amazing number of times. It was wonderful to see so many Bison works of art displayed in the gallery and throughout the halls of the Center. Students were honored in painting, drawing and photography. Kayley Davault's painting posted below was awarded Best In Show. She was awarded at least 8 scholarships, her painting was purchased ($500) and the painting will become a billboard in the Nashville Area to promote the Arts. All of the Art will remain displayed at the Renaissance Center until January 13. A special thanks to Art Teachers Blake Long and Christi Schroader and Photography Teacher Suzanne Highers. I will post more works soon.

Others honored included Michelle Lajoie, Best Drawing, winning $48,000 in scholarships. Austin McDougal, Best Painting, winning $48,000 in scholarships. Kayley Davault and Chase Fuelner received Honorable Mentions in the 12th grade division and Andrea Forsythe received 3rd place in the 12th grade division. Jolynn Tran placed 1st, Amanda Acevedo placed 2nd and Ashley Binkley placed 3rd with Station Camp sweeping the 11th grade division. Leandria Edwards placed 1st the the 10th grade division and Austin McDougal placed 2nd in the 9th grade division.

The Station Camp Thundering Herd Marching Band has been in the DC area this weekend. They competed in the USSBA National Championships in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday and have had a chance to see the sites while there too. All of the bands in the competition were awarded the opportunity to compete by winning their respective State Championships last year. Bison Alumnus Nathan Stebbins recently completed his BS in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology at UT-Knoxville and has started this fall at MIT. Cross-Country @ State Championships Again

Coach Frech and the 2011 Cross-Country teams competed this weekend in the State Championships at the Steeplechase in Nashville. Both teams ran hard and scored well. The Girl's team placed 3rd in the State and the Boy's placed 20th. We are very proud of the continued success of our running programs.

Reggie Drennon's raft won the fifth biannual Huck Finn Regatta on Station Camp Creek Friday, October 28. Drennon (pictured center) outdistanced the second-place raft of Brad McCorkle (left) and Rachael Hawkins (right) in a plunge down the creek. The activity brought to an end a ten-week study of Huckleberry Finn in Mr. Dittes's English 11 standard class. Following the regatta, students wrote stories about their rafts' performances, using vocabulary gleaned from the writings of Mark Twain.

Spanish Club at Cheekwood

The Spanish Club went to the Cheekwood "Dia de los muertos" (Day of the Dead) cultural festival last Saturday. We competed for the first time as a school in the "tapete"competition drawing a "Day of the Dead themed mural" on the road in chalk. Austin McDougal, the Club President, led the artistic efforts but EVERYONE DREW!!! Real teamwork as you will see in the pictures as our mural developed. We won "Most Colorful" which we most certainly are. Also attached are photos from our own Dia de los muertos at the Camp.

The Theatre Department of Station Camp High School completed a marathon day of 5 performances of Alice in Wonderland. The show got rave reviews from this bias observer. Station Camp High school Army JROTC Drill Team competed in the 6th Annual Eagle Battalion Drill Meet located in Sheperdsville KY. The Drill Team lead by MSG (R) Harville, C/CSM Briggs, C/Maj. Stiltner, and C/CPT. Hanson took two first place trophies, two third place trophies, one second place trophy which led to a second place overall out of 8 schools in attendance. Allison Durham also took 5th place out of 175 cadets in knockout. This was our first Drill Meet of the year and our cadets did very well, they represented Station Camp High School with such professionalism. (Stated MSG (R) Harville)

Station Camp FFA Summer Success

On July 13th, the Station Camp FFA Chapter was awarded the Tennessee Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Program. On July 18-22, ten members attended Camp Clements FFA Leadership Training Camp where they won Quiz Bowl and Outstanding Officer Team. Christy Chicas also won the Quiz Contest and was elected Camp Council President. In addition, Christy was awarded a scholarship to attend the Washington Leadership Conference where she had the opportunity to learn about citizenship and government and was able to meet with Congressman Diane Black.

Summer Leadership Camp

Nine students from Station Camp High School Army JROTC took part in a summer leadership camp held at Wendall H Ford in Greenville Ky. Approximately over 800 Students from various schools in middle Tennessee and Kentucky took part in the annual summer camp. Students learned various leadership and team building skills taking part in Orienteering, water craft skills, water confidence, obstacle course, High ropes and Zip-line rappelling, Team sports, Rappelling from a 60ft tower, and negotiating a Rope Bridge. The 9 students from Station Camp high school JROTC had a great time. The mission of the Army JROTC program at Station Camp High School "To Motivate Young People To Become Better Citizens".

A senior at Florida State University, Brandon was the anchor leg of the National Champion 4X100 Relay at the NCAA Track and Field Championships this weekend. Brandon also finished 4th nationally in the 200 meters.

While at Station Camp, Brandon was a two-time State Champion in the 200 meter dash.

Many students from SCHS were treated to a show at Station Camp Middle on Tuesday. Interact, a deaf acting troupe from Knoxville performed Cinderella, Cinderella. DECA in Orlando

Attached are photos of Station Camp DECA at ICDC in Orlando, Florida. We competed our tails off from April 29-May 5 with 19 students in the mix. Kimmi McVay and Jonae Shaw placed top ten internationally in the Financial Literacy Promotion Project. Our DECA directors are Meghann Knake and Nicole Mayes.

Backstage Oklahoma

National Latin Awards

Marcelo DeFreitas was awarded a "Magna Cum Laude" and Richard Dawson, a "Cum Laude" designation by the National Junior Classical League for the scores they achieved in the annual National Latin Examination. The National Latin Exam is administered to over 150,000 students in 50 states and 12 countries around the world.

According to Jim Carr, Latin teacher at SCHS, Marcelo and Richie were among 97 of 116 Honors Latin students who sat for the prestigious national exam. Several other students were only 2 or 3 points away from achieving this designation.

Prom 2011

Sumner Co. High School Art Exhibit

Students from Station Camp had work displayed at Monthaven for the Sumner County High School Art Exhibit. The annual exhibit is sponsored by the Hendersonville Arts Council. Michelle Lajoie won 1st place in the graphics division and Austin McDougal received a Honorable Mention. Mary Kate Gregory and Nicole Uchtman received Honorable Mentions in the painting division. Dylan Bullock

Dylan Bullock, Station Camp High School, was recently chosen to receive
one of the four Will R. Manier, Jr. Memorial Scholarships from the Rotary
District # 6770. Dylan was sponsored by the Gallatin Noon Rotary Club and
was selected out of 74 applicants to receive this award.

The Will R. Manier Jr. Scholarship is named after one of Tennessee's
most illustrious Rotarians and is awarded to students that have demonstrated
scholarship, work experience, leadership, maturity and character. Dylan
will receive $3,000 for his Freshman year at the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville where he will work on a degree in engineering.

Youth Legislature 2011

At the Youth in Government Conference last weekend, Vaughn Roberson, Ava Korby and Zack Bowling saw their bill to protect the privacy of cell phones during traffic stops pass both houses and get signed by the governor. Seth Walker and Kaitiye Beegle’s bill to allow outside restaurants and caterers serve in school cafeterias was the school’s top-ranked of the weekend.

Along with speeches and debates, students also met with both state senator Kerry Roberts and U.S. senator Bob Corker at the capitol in Nashville

SCHS was proud hosts of the 2011 Sumner County Special Olympics. Thanks so much for all of the volunteers from all of the schools. We wish the sun had stayed out a little longer and the breeze had blown a little less but awards, recognition and ribbons were the order of the day.

Young Chemists

The Bison Chemistry Department played host to our neighbors today. Third graders from Station Camp Elementary spent the morning and afternoon participating in Hands-On Chemistry Experiments. Members of the SCHS AP Chemistry classes served as mentors to our future scientists as the TCAP testing is around the corner. Good Luck Young Bison. Eighth graders from SCMS came and visited today. Our future Bison received small group tours from DECA members and well as information from the guidance department and information about the clubs and organizations at SCHS. Great job by DECA for lining this day up logistically. Students from our other feeder schools will visit later in April.

Northeastern University Students in Berlin

Day trip to Dessau, as written by Chelsea Brown Class of 2013

Class time in Berlin is divided between lectures and field trips. We are given the unique opportunity of studying historically relevant structures, such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s Altes Museum, and then visiting them shortly thereafter. In addition to sites in Berlin we have taken day trips to visit relevant architectural sites throughout Germany. Recently we spent a day in Dessau, where we were able to visit two sites that each play a prominent role in our respective sustainability and history courses.

First we toured the Federal Environmental Agency. Designed by Sauerbruch Hutton, this office building is a leading example in sustainable design. The organic form, bright colors, and ample light provided a pleasant contrast to the surrounding former industrial area of Dessau. Our tour guide, an employee of the Agency, explained in depth many of the sustainable technologies incorporated throughout the design. In addition to solar panels, the building also utilizes geothermal heat exchange in the reduction of energy consumption. The office building also maintains a connection to its surroundings in its use of locally sourced materials, as well as publicly accessible auditorium, library, and café.

In the afternoon we were given the opportunity to tour the Bauhaus. Considered one of highest points of modern architecture, it was an exciting moment to walk through the entrance and feel as if we had finally “arrived.” After years of looking at pictures of the campus designed by Walter Gropius, we were able to witness it firsthand. Our tour guide led us through a number of the buildings on the campus, as well as into Gropius’ office, in which were situated iconic pieces of Bauhaus furniture. After words we lined up below the iconic “Bauhaus” sign to have our picture taken, just as in all of the pictures we have seen.

DECA Nationals--Orlando

Station Camp DECA was in full-force this week with 37 students competing at DECA State. The 37 won their way to State by successfully competing at the regional competition. On Tuesday, eighteen of our competitors qualified for the international competition coming up in Orlando. This is the largest group SC DECA has had qualify for the international level (in 2008, we took 15), so we are very proud of them all!! :)

Winter Guard and Drum Line

The Station Camp High School's Winter Guard and Drum Line competed this weekend at Beech High School. I was able to catch the Guard's performance on Sunday afternoon and was very proud. It was obvious how much practice and hard work went into a great performance. Both groups are under the direction of Phil Waters.

Zumba for Destanie

Here are several pictures of the Dancing for Destanie Zumbathon. This was an FCCLA Chapter Service Project led by Kerri Heslin and Johnquetta Webb. We had 7 certified instructors from around the Middle Tennessee area who volunteered their time. There were many local businesses that donated items for a silent auction and we had approximately 85 people participate. There has been over $2000 collected for Destanie Wilson, a Bison senior who is battling cancer.

Mock Trial 2011

The SCHS Mock Trial Team competed in Gallatin last weekend, returning with 2 ½ verdicts out of six matches. Heather Dickson won the runner-up award for Best Defense Lawyer for her powerful opening statement and skill in direct and cross examination.

Ag Issues Team in Action

The FFA Agriculture Issues team is preparing for their state competition by presenting their forum on animal testing to different community businesses and organizations. On February 15th, they spoke for the Gallatin Morning Rotary Club and on the 16th they presented for the Middle TN Ag Club and the TN Department of Agriculture. The team will also present for Hendersonville Boy Scout Troop 406 on February 21st and the Sumner County Farm Bureau on February 28th. Team members are Kearstin Forte, Heather Dickson, Aaron Haley, Krista Gilbert, Bailey Forester, Christy Chicas, and Rachel Miller. The FFA is under the direction of Allie Ellis and Craig Winquist.

SCHS Teacher of the Year

Congrats to David Collins who was voted by his peers as the SCHS Teacher of the Year. The award includes a plaque, prime parking space and his principal's appreciation. Mr. Collins has taught for 16 years and currently teaches students Beginning Chorus, Advanced Chorus, Music History and Music Theory.

Governor's School for the Arts

Six Station Camp student's have been accepted to The Governor's School of Visual Arts. Over 450 high school students from all over the state of Tennessee apply to take part in an intense five week program during the summer at Middle Tennessee State University studying the Visual Arts with only 35-40 seats available. Station Camp students will proudly represent Sumner County with one sixth of the total Visual Arts participants this summer. The Station Camp Art department is lead by Blake Long and Chrisi Schroader. Participants include Brandon Denny, Ashley Binkley, Leandria Edwards, Andrea Forsythe, Courtney Warren, and Damon Alexander.

FFA Community Service

On Sunday, February 13th the Station Camp FFA Chapter took part in a community service activity at the Tractor Supply Co. off Centerpoint Rd in Hendersonville. The students served hot dogs and cokes to anyone who made a donation to the “Harvest for America” food drive in which Station Camp FFA is participating.
